Biography

  • I am Karim Ahmed Hammad. I was born and educated in Egypt. I received my Bachelor degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering in Aug. 2005, and my Masters degree in the same major in Jan. 2009. All from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Cairo campus (AASTMT).

    My previous research experience in the Masters Thesis was about the SDR (Software Defined Radio) technology and its application in the mobile communications. The thesis developed a new model for an all digital RF transmitter suitable for implementation on FPGAs. The thesis carried out the idea through software simulation using Matlab toolboxes, followed by hardware design and implementation using Mentor Graphics tools for the proposed model using ALTERA UP3 Evaluation board. This work contributed two papers. The first paper was published in the 2nd IEEE international conference on signals, circuits and systems, Tunisia, Nov. 2008. The second paper was published in the 26th National Radio Science Conference (NRSC), Egypt, March 2009.

    During my undergraduate study I have received 4 year full tuition scholarship (out of total of 5 years) for GPA=4.00/4.00 achievement. In August 2005 my graduation project entitled "Design and Implementation of Digital Speech Encryption/Decryption System on an FPGA" was honored an IEEE award in the annual Egyptian Engineering Day contest as the best graduation project in the field of communications engineering over 50 participating projects in the same field. The project was then ed by the government to be funded as a project to produce an electronic equipment that can be used in commercial applications. This success was the main motivation that brought me the courage to continue with the graduate studies. I was graduated in the 2nd place over 138 graduates in the spring class of 2005. Afterwards, I received a full tuition graduate teaching assistantship for a masters program from the Electronics and Communications Department that started in Sept. 2005.

    My main research interest is: digital signal processing for communications, wireless communications and digital circuit design. As still being an evolving technology and active area of research, I am motivated to continue working with SDR as being future proof for highly flexible and adaptive wireless networks. On the other hand, cognitive radios, as being the ultimate definition of the theoretical and practical application of SDR which will provide higher intelligence to wireless devices capable of working independently from the network operator, is also a very challenging research area for me to work in. My aim from this research is not only developing and analyzing theoretical approaches but also verifying my theoretical contribution with an efficient technique for practical implementation as well. However, my research potential is not only limited to the SDR and cognitive radios but also extended to evolving wireless communication networks, advanced DSP techniques (i.e. adaptive signal processing, estimation theory,…etc(.
