Associate Professor

Sarah Ahmed Zaki

Assistant Professor

biography

I am an assistant professor of architecture at AASTMT, Smart Village campus. I am also a graduate of the same institution (Alexandria campus), having completed my BSc and MSc degrees in architectural engineering in 2006 and 2009 respectively. My PhD investigation (Cardiff University, Cardiff, UK, 2013) served as the foundation for my current research interest in using multi-disciplinary approaches to decipher how building design decisions are made. Between 2009-2013, I used social science and psychology research methods to study the interpersonal relationship between architects and building performance simulation (BPS) consultants to unpack whether and how this may inform design decision-making. My subsequent post-doctoral research (Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) was about understanding how’ behavioural interventions affect building occupants’ energy use patterns in a residential context. My present position at AASTMT places a strong emphasis on design studio teaching. At the undergraduate level, I teach first year studios (architectural drawing and architectural design 1). My research-based teaching philosophy has further re-directed my multi-disciplinary research attention toward the architectural design studio, as I am currently investigating how BPS is taught to architects at multiple universities worldwide. I am also beginning a research project that looks at the impact of social media on knowledge acquisition in the design studio. In addition, I teach research methods on the newly-established postgraduate (Msc) programme. In addition, I am also head of the RIBA setting committee at Smart Village.
