Lecturer

Yomna Saad Abd El Raouf

Senior TA

biography

Yomna studied at Ain Shams University, Egypt, where in 2004 she obtained a BSc in Architectural Engineering. She then joined Architectural engineering in Cairo University, where in 2009 she received a MSc in Architectural Studies. In 2013, She gained a Professional Diploma in Project Management from American University in Cairo. She got her PhD from Newcastle University in 2021 and was certified in Research for Humanities and social science in 2017 (HaSs Research Training). She has worked professionally as an architect in international firms on building projects and urban planning and is an Assistant Lecturer at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology & Maritime Transport (AAST) in Cairo. Due to the urgent demand for more energy-efficient solutions, she was interested in finding architectural sustainable solutions, paying particular interest to environmental performance of facades. In 2016, Yomna received a scholarship from Newcastle University (NUORS) for international students to pursue her PhD. The PhD research focuses on investigating performance-based designs of facades and solar shadings to optimize energy performance and achieve thermal comfort within buildings in hot arid climates. Previous work within Yomna’s research group in Cairo investigated parametric methods of performance assessment and developed two projects to optimize facade design. The first project developed a modern version of the traditional Arabic mashrabeya. The second project investigated optimizing brick configurations to reduce energy consumption. Her studies in Newcastle University include a soft mechanics approach as a solution for responsive solar shading that can adapt to changing environmental conditions and thereby provide thermal comfort while reducing energy consumption.
