The Impct Of Port Infrastructure on global supply chan and international trade

Graduation Project
Start Date : 06 Oct 2021-06 Oct 2021
Ports Infrastructure plays a key role in facilitating trade, especially since recent trade liberalization in Africa has resulted in significant tariff reductions. This study quantifies the impacts of both hard and soft port infrastructures on trade volume for exporters and importers in the African continent while controlling for economic growth indicators؛GDP, population. Ports infrastructure is essential for local and regional economic development. Emerging research investigated the impact of logistics services on international trade. However, there is a lack of studies that focus on the relationship between logistics and trade openness. This paper seeks to shed light on the role of ports infrastructure on Trade Openness in African countries. For this purpose, Panel Data is used to determine the effect of port infrastructure in these countries’ Trade Openness. The results show that port infrastructure is significantly affecting Trade Openness in the African continent. This means that better logistics performance can be considered one of the important reasons for increasing trade openness in all African countries and reducing trade costs. This study conducted an empirical inquiry into the broader economic contribution of seaborne trade, from a port infrastructure quality and logistics performance perspective. Investment in quality improvement of port infrastructure and its contribution to the economy is often questioned by politicians, investors, and the general public. The results reveal that it is vital for developing countries to continuously improve the quality of port infrastructure as it contributes to better logistics performance, leading to higher seaborne trade, yielding higher economic growth.
