Program Description

The program objective is to prepare the officers with the knowledge, skills, and experience of officers in charge of a navigational watch regarding all aspects of navigation, watchkeeping, operations, maintenance, and also a Safety-focused approach to identifying hazards and preventing incidents. Full compliance with navigational, environmental, and cargo requirements is emphasized. Officers will be able to carry out safely the watchkeeping duties of an officer in charge of a navigational watch, both at sea and in port.

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying to sit for the 2nd Mate certificate of Competency examination shall meet the following requirements according to ministerial decree 221/2013: Be not less than 18 years of age. Have completed a secondary school "scientific department", any equivalent Foreign education, graduates from maritime secondary school (Seamanship and fishery department) or holding a diploma in river transport. Meet the medical fitness requirements for the certificate. Shall fulfill the requirements of one of the following streams: 1st stream: Have an approved seagoing service of not less than 6 months on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more on ocean going voyages after the date of holding the 3rd officer certificate of competency. 2nd stream: Have completed a basic study program of at least 2 years in the recognized maritime institution. Have an approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months following Guided/planned Sea training program in the capacity of deck cadet on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more on ocean going voyages. During the required seagoing service, bridge watchkeeping duties under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than six months. The sea training has to be documented in the Candidate’s approved training record book. Have completed the required upgrading training course in the recognized maritime institution. 3rd stream: Have Completed study program of at least 4 years in the recognized maritime institution, which includes the required upgrading training course and an approved seagoing service of not less than 12 months following Guided/planned Sea training program in the capacity of deck cadet on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more on ocean going voyages. During the required seagoing service, bridge watchkeeping duties under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than six months. The sea training has to be documented in the Candidate’s approved training record book.

Tests & Prerequisites

Obtaining an approved seagoing service of not less than 36 months on board ships of 500 gross tonnage or more on ocean-going voyages. Performing bridge watch-keeping duties under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than six months. Accomplishing the required upgrading training course in a recognized maritime institution.
