MSc. in Ship Operation & Marine Safety Program Track (courses & thesis)

Program Aims

This program covers different ship operations and safety applications in the marine industry. The main aim of the program is to provide students with sufficient knowledge and experiences in the field of shipping management and safety implementation at sea. Moreover, this program aims to enhance student research capabilities and expand their research horizons. In addition, Program aims to provide education that enable graduate students to respond to diverse employment opportunities, both at sea and ashore.


Program Objectives

This program will provide students with a broad scope of knowledge, skills and capacities in different studying domains in order to ensure that the Master’s students are familiar with sufficient diversity of approaches, advanced knowledge and experiences. Furthermore, necessary research skills and proficiencies will be provided to ensure that students achieve high performance standards in their careers and can enhance their working environment. Students successfully completing this program will be able to carry out different research co-ordination tasks in different shipping fields.


Program Learning Outcomes

Student successfully completing this program will be able to:

PLO 1: Advanced Knowledge: Graduates are able to incorporate in-depth relevant knowledge in professional practices for the benefits of both national and international communities. Graduates are able to apply their knowledge and skills in different areas including marine human resources management, fleet operation and quality and safety management. Students in addition will acquire diverse knowledge and capabilities in the field of maritime safety administration, ship''s surveying and port operations management. However, student will gain sufficient knowledge and skills in data analysis processing and research methodology.

PLO 2: Research: Conduct and manage independent and original research in maritime shipping and marine safety for the sake of both national and international communities.

PLO 3: Critical Thinking:  Graduates are scientifically competent in solving problems logically, analytically and creatively based on sound facts and ideas.

PLO 4: Communication: Graduates are able to apply a wide range of relevant knowledge through effective channels.

PLO 5: Professional Ethics and Integrity:  Graduates are able to balance professional and ethical responsibilities including contemporary issues and environmental awareness.

PLO 6: Life-long learning: Life-long learning: Graduates are able to adopt the latest relevant knowledge and cutting-edge technologies through gathering knowledge and experience, and they can also continue in the same stream for Doctorate Degree for life-long learning process.

PLO 7: Management and Entrepreneurship: Graduates are able to explain understanding of managerial concepts and identify business opportunities and initiate action to achieve it.

Third: Refer to expert recommendation "In order to ensure that the Master’s students are familiarized with a sufficient variety of approaches, external lecturers should be invited whenever possible".

Action Taken

50% of subjects offered in the current Academic Semester (2016-2017) are running by external lecturers. Furthermore, one of the objectives of the MPI strategic plan is to increase the outsourcing teaching staff 10% annually.


Careers

This program offers excellent opportunities to those who have marine background and have intended to quit working as seafarers and have chances to join work ashore. This study provides new carrier opportunities to work as quality assurance officer, safety officer and marine supervisor in shipping companies and seaports.

Employability

There are wide verities of employment in Egypt and in the Middle East as general. Mostly, heads of shipping companies and seaports were graduated from the institute and holding Master''s Degree in ship operation and marine safety track.
