Admission - Master and Officers - Second Mate

Second Officer Certificate of Competency:
Duration: 20 Weeks        No. of Courses:   Twice / Year
 
Candidates applying to sit for Second Officer Certificate of Competency examination shall meet the following requirements:
1-The candidate must not be less than 21 years of age.
2-The candidate must successfully pass the medical fitness checkup in accordance with the standards of issuing Seaman’s Book set by the ministerial decree issued for regulating the issuance and renewal of Seaman’s Book. 
3-The candidate must be a holder of General Certificate of Education, or an equivalent foreign certificate, or be a graduate of Maritime Secondary Schools (majoring in Seamanship and Fisheries).
4-The candidate must meet the requirements of one of the following streams:

-         The First Stream:
The candidate must have served at sea after obtaining Third Officer Certificate of Competency as an officer in charge of a navigational watch, or as an assistant officer in charge of navigational watch onboard seagoing ships for a period:
-Not less than 3 months for those candidates who have successfully completed basic maritime studies in an accredited maritime institute, where study duration is not less than two academic years , before obtaining Third Officer Certificate of Competency.
-Not less than 6 months for those candidates who had not completed basic maritime studies before obtaining Third Officer Certificate of Competency.

-         The Second Stream:
-Successful completion of basic maritime studies in an accredited maritime institute, where the duration of study is not less than 2 academic years.
-(a) Completion of a seagoing service period which is not less than 18 months, during which the candidate served as marine cadet for a period of planned sea training not less than 12 months onboard seagoing ships.
Or 
(b) Completion of seagoing service period not less than 15 months as marine cadet during which the candidate serve for a period of guided sea training of not less than 4 months, in addition to serving for a planned sea training period of not less than 11 months .

-         The Third Stream:
Successful completion of a program of maritime studies, the duration of which is not less than 4 years, in an accredited maritime institute, provided that the program comprises with a guided sea training period which is not less than 12 months, or a planned sea training period which is not less than 18 months as a marine cadet onboard seagoing ships.
5-The candidate applying to obtain Second Officer Certificate of Competency must submit to the Major Committee for Masters and Deck Officers documentary evidence to the effect that he has successfully accomplished all the training tasks.
6-successfully Complete of a recognized upgrading session in an accredited maritime institute,
7-successfully Complete of the short mandatory courses.

·         Mandatory courses:

1-      Fire prevention and fire fighting.

2-      First aid course.

3-      Personal safety and social responsibility.

4-      Proficiency in survival crafts.

5-      Prevention and combating of marine pollution.

6-      Marine radar and automatic radar plotting and ARPA

7-      Communication course.
