Admission - Engineers - Chief Engineer

Chief marine engineer certificate of competency:


Duration: 9 Weeks                            No. of Courses:  4 Times / Year


Candidates applying to sit for Chief Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency examination shall meet the following requirements:

- First : Serving onboard ships the propulsion power of which is 3000 kilowatts or more:
Candidates applying to sit for chief marine engineer certificate of competency examination to serve onboard ships (the propulsion power of which is 3000 kilowatts or more) shall meet the following requirements:
1-The candidate must not be less than 24 years of age.
2-The candidate must successfully pass the medical fitness checkup in accordance with the standards of issuing Seaman’s book set by the ministerial decree issued for regulating the issuance and renewal of Seaman’s books.    
3-The candidate must have served at sea after obtaining second marine engineer certificate of competency for 24 months as a marine engineer in charge of an engineering watch in the engine-room provided that the set period comprises not less than 12 months spent in operating the engines, as appropriate as (diesel, steam, gas turbine) of sea-going ships where the propulsion power is not less than 3000 kilowatts.
4-The candidate must be a holder of second marine engineer certificate of competency.
5-The transitional provisions stipulated in part (V) of ministerial decree NO (24)/1998 – (maritime transport), shall be strictly observed.

- Second : Serving onboard ships the propulsion power of which is less than 3000 kilowatts :
Candidates applying to sit for chief marine engineer certificate of competency examination are to serve onboard ships the propulsion power of which is less than 3000 kilowatts shall meet the following requirements:
1-The candidate must not be less than 24 years of age.
2-The candidate must successfully pass the medical checkup in accordance with the standards of issuing Seaman’s book set by the ministerial decree issued for regulating the issuing and renewal of seaman’s books.
3-The candidate must be a holder of second marine engineer certificate of competency.
4-The candidate must have served at sea after obtaining second marine engineer certificate of competency for 24 months as a marine engineer in charge of an engineering watch in the engine-room provided that the set period comprises not less than 12 months spent in operating the engines, as appropriate as (diesel, steam, gas turbine) of (sea–going) ships, the propulsion power of which is not less than 3000 kilowatts.
5-The transitional provisions stipulated in part (V) of ministerial decree no (24)/1998 – (maritime transport), shall be strictly observed.

With respect to holders of the certificate which qualifies them to serve onboard ships, the propulsion power of which is less than 3000 kilowatts, they can obtain the certificate which qualifies them to serve onboard ships, the propulsion power of which is 3000 kilowatts or more, after successful completion of the sea going service period which qualifies them to serve onboard ships having higher propulsion power, and successfully passing an oral examination.
