Program Description

As all the programs offered, the architectural conservation track is composed of a core curriculum, a concentration and electives. As of the third and fourth years, the elective courses can be grouped together intot two themes: conservation cultural materials and architectural conservation, if students wish to continue in the same specialization in their graduate studies, they may choose one group or the other. Students also have the freedom to mix between them if interested.

Learning Outcomes

  • • Attain adequate knowledge of the technique of preservation, conservation and restoration of material culture. • Conduct applied research using the different skills learnt through library research, museums, laboratory investigation and field work. • Relate to the modern applied scientific methods in conservation cultural materials. • Create practical methods in the field of conservation cultural materials. • Acquire working knowledge of museums and site management, and preservation of cultural heritage theory and practice. • Formulate an academic opinion on the different theories of preservation, conservation and restoration cultural materials. • Develop a strategic plan for the care and conservation of material culture in archaeological sites, museums, and archaeometric laboratories. • Attain a working knowledge of the different dynamics of laws and legislations of material culture conservation

Markets and Career

  • •Pursue graduate studies and working in academia as researchers or instructors. • Work as a conservator on the different foreign missions and salvage projects working in conservation cultural materials. • Work for the different international funding boards in the cultural sector such as. USAID, EU Commission, UNDP, World Bank, the Agha Khan Foundation and UNESCO. • Work on the different cultural heritage management projects post conflict in the world • Work as a professional writer and media expert in conservation cultural materials. • Work in the different governmental entities worldwide that are concerned with the conservation of material culture. • Work on research projects in libraries and museums and archaeological sites. • Work in the tourism industry on study tours • Work in private and public companies specializing in the preservation, conservation and restoration of material culture.

Admission Requirements

a. Completion of secondary education certificate or equivalent certificates according to the particular requirements of each major. b. Meeting the minimum score required to join the college which is announced before the beginning of each semester, in light of the minimum score mandated by AASTMT, as well as the annually announced terms, regulations and qualifying courses per certificate as specified by the Supreme Council of Education Affairs. c. Being physically fit as per stipulated levels. d. Showing good conduct with no dishonouring judicial sentence issued against them. e. Submission of all required admission documents. f. Approval of delegating entities in case of student’s delegation from any country or authority. g. Passing admission exams determined by AASTMT. h. Pledging to follow AASTMT rules and regulations.

Tests & Prerequisites

Students wanting to join the Material Culture Conservation Track in their third year must have a “Science” high school degree in Thanawiya Amma or itsequivalent.

Brief

The study of the conservation material culture is an applied and a systematic study of the history and techniques of cultural materials in various civilizations of the ancient world. The study will focus on wood, pottery, mummies, mural paintings, metals, textiles, and manuscripts. The programme will provide students with modern and advanced methods and techniques of examination and analysis of archaeological cultural materials through an interdisciplinary approach using the modern methods of care and conservation of cultural materials. This program will provide students with the various administrative and technical skills required to be able to participate actively in preserving the cultural materials in the museums, public libraries and archaeological sites.
