Web Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems: The Effective Way for Distance Education
The recent rapid development in educational technology has resulted in virtual approaches of teaching and learning options available to educational organizations around the world. Teaching approaches that were generally accepted are no longer acceptable today because of greater access to new technology, awareness of the advantages of more student-centered approaches to learning, and the increasing demand on more flexibly delivered and technology based courseware. With the beginning of the new millennium, technology has the potential to dramatically alter the face of education. Now, there is a great demand on distance education programs that are particularly appropriate for those who cannot attend a traditional on-campus education programs. In response to this demand educational organizations should put and implement distance education courseware and more researches should be carried out and directed toward assuring and increasing the effectiveness of these courseware. Within the community of educators the WWW has been seen as a new media for course delivery and a tool for collaboration and information interchange and on this basis they strongly recommend its integration into education process. On the other hand, WWW full value as an effective teaching medium for individual learning has yet to be realized and problems associated with Web-based courses should be solved. Internet-based courses should be able to understand students, customize feedback and presentation, give appropriate advice and help, and dynamically support student navigation through the course hyperspace. Integrating Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) and Internet technologies to develop Web-Based Intelligent Tutoring Systems (WBITS) is a way to integrate the adaptivity and intelligence of ITS with WWW as a very popular and high available medium for distance education.
