RESTORATION OF THE ECOLOGICAL PROCESS IN ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT
In the recent years, the impact of human and urbanization became apparent on the environment and the surrounding native landscape. One of those damages is the problem of degradation which can be defined as a human induced natural process, which negatively affects the capacity of land to function effectively within an ecosystem by accepting, storing and recycling water, energy, and nutrients.’ Accordingly, the solution for this problem was ‘ecological restoration’, which is the process of assisting the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded damaged destroyed. The aim of eco-restoration is to protect, enhance and conserve the surrounding eco-system and biodiversity from loss. The Ecological restoration differs from other approaches of restoration in fact it tries to restore the original biodiversity and ecosystem processes that existed before the degradation disturbance. The aim of the paper is demonstrating the severity of degradation as an environmental problem and introducing ecological restoration as a guideline to reduce degradation and eventually eliminate it. Keywords: degradation, ecosystem, ecological restoration, biodiversity, degraded landscape.
