Facebook Accessibility for Egyptian People with Visual Disability: An Experimental Study
Social networks’ accessibility is considered vital for full participation in the society especially for people with disability. Accordingly, the study investigates Facebook accessibility for Egyptian people with visual disability. Thus, the research inquires on:
• How is Facebook accessible to Egyptian people with visual disability?
• What is the impact of enhancing Facebook accessibility on the usage of Egyptian people with visual disability?
In order to understand the research problem, an experimental method has been utilised, where 50 pre-test questionnaires were distributed over fifty visually impaired respondents in order to Select suitable candidates for the experiment. Fifteen respondents were found to be experts in using computers, Internet, social networks, and assistive technologies. Expert respondents have conducted the required experiment on Facebook to identify accessibility problems. After that, a post-test questionnaire was conducted to investigate the impact of enhancing Facebook accessibility on the usage of Egyptian people with visual disability.
The results of the study at hand show that some features of the Facebook website are inaccessible for people with visual disability, while some other features are considered semi-accessible. The research concludes that Egyptian people with visual disability have received insignificant attention regarding these problems. Finally, the research suggests a list of recommendations for Facebook in order to be more accessible.
