Description

This course is an introduction to the 19th century novel. Elements of the novel (setting, plot, story, characterization, etc.) will receive ample treatment and examination, and so will the cultural and historical background of the Victorian Novel. Through an in-depth study of three novels, students will be acquainted with the various styles and trends within this rich genre.

• By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1.1 demonstrate an understanding of the cultural and historical background of the Victorian era and link this knowledge to the novels under study.
  1.2 read selected major English novels from the nineteenth century.
  1.3 explain and compare/contrast elements of the novel.
  1.4 study various formal features of the genre, and their use in creating narratives of self and society.
  1.5 examine how the novels under study respond to the social contexts in which they were written.
  1.6 relate analytical and critical thinking.
  2.1 apply logical order in writing critical appreciation of the novels.
  2.2 categorize different genres.
  2.3 distinguish types and styles of writing and narration.
  3.1 justify analysis of different themes and techniques.
  3.2 write critical essays on the elements of Novel (Themes, Characters, Plot, Setting…).
  3.3 comment on significant quotations.
  4.1 master creative and artistic writing.
  4.2 improve revising and editing skills.
  4.3 enhance the writing skills.
