By the grace of God, the workshop "From Data to Decarbonization: Energy System Modelling with PyPSA-Earth" was successfully held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, in Room G506 at the College of Engineering and Technology, Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) – Alexandria Main Campus – in collaboration with the Deanship of Scientific Research and Innovation and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Control.
The workshop saw outstanding participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as young researchers from both the Electrical Engineering and Control and Mechanical Engineering departments. It featured hands-on training on PyPSA-Earth, an open-source tool for modeling electrical grids, loads, generation units, and running various scenarios to evaluate energy system performance—supporting effective planning and management for energy transition strategies.
The workshop was delivered by:
✨ Marco Schamel – OTH Regensburg (Germany)
✨ Anton Achhammer – OTH Regensburg (Germany)
In attendance were:
✨ Prof. Dr. Nahla Az El-Din Zaghloul – Head of the Electrical Engineering and Control Department
✨ Dr. Rania Aasem – Assistant Professor, Electrical Engineering and Control Department
✨ Dr. Mohamed Metwally – Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Department
✨ Dr. Noor Moharam – Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering Department
✨ Dr. Ayat Atia – Lecturer, Electrical Engineering and Control Department
This initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and implemented in collaboration with:
???? Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE)
???? H2Global Foundation
The workshop offered a unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge open-source tools for energy system modeling, with a special focus on Egypt as a case study for a just and effective transition toward carbon neutrality.
