By the grace of Allah, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the Electrical Engineering and Control Department at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology – Main Campus, Abu Qir – successfully concluded a free lecture series organized in collaboration with El Sewedy Power Systems Projects (PSP), titled:
✨ "Engineering Mobility: Railway Systems & Signalling" ✨
The event spanned four weeks, totaling 18 training hours, and kicked off on September 15, 2025, via Zoom.
???? Presented by:
✨ Eng. Mohamed El-Hamshary – Commissioning & Startup Senior Manager, Elsewedy Electric PSP
✨ Eng. Belal Ahmed – Senior Design Engineer, Elsewedy Electric PSP
???? Key Topics Covered:
The series began with an introduction to the concept of mobility—its critical role in reducing emissions and advancing environmental sustainability through efficient mass transit. Participants explored various railway systems (electric trains, high-speed rail, metro), along with key selection criteria such as population density, cost, and operational environment. The course also introduced Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) in rail systems, relevant international standards, and essential terminology.
Sessions 3 and 4 traced the evolution of railways—from steam and diesel engines to modern electric and high-speed trains—highlighting technological advancements, power supply units, and iconic examples like Japan’s Shinkansen, France’s TGV, and China’s Maglev.
Sessions 5 and 6 focused on railway signalling systems, covering core control principles such as Block Systems and Interlocking, train detection methods, visual and GSM-R radio signalling, modern electrical signalling, Grades of Automation (GoA), track detection technologies (Track Circuits & Axle Counters), and smart level-crossing systems that enhance safety.
Session 7 was dedicated to showcasing El Sewedy PSP’s flagship rail projects, including Egypt’s High-Speed Electric Train and Cairo Metro, with insights into engineering challenges and innovative solutions that ensured successful delivery.
The final session explored cutting-edge trends: Digital Railways, the integration of IoT and AI in signalling and control systems, and the future of high-speed and intelligent sustainable transport.
???????????????? The series attracted a wide audience—students from the Electrical Engineering and Control Department, peers from other Egyptian universities, and professionals from across Egypt and beyond—creating a vibrant, knowledge-rich environment.
The department extends its deepest gratitude to Eng. Mohamed El-Hamshary and Eng. Belal Ahmed for their expertise and dedication, and to all participants for their active engagement, which made this initiative a resounding success.
