This course is intended to provide students with introductory preparation for basic studies in literature as well as enable them to think critically, creatively, and comparatively about literature in English. Students will be able to understand, evaluate, and apply a range of critical ideas and theories relevant to literary criticism. They will also develop a critical understanding of the defining characteristics of key literary genres (prose fiction, poetry, and drama) and various literary periods.
