Empowering Change, Leading the Future
Introduction
AASTMT's commitment to sustainability is driven by student-led communities that promote environmental awareness and action across campus and beyond. These communities include the Students Sustainability Ambassadors (SSA). SSA fosters leadership, innovation, and collaboration, focusing on environmental stewardship, climate action, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SSA is a dynamic and diverse community of students from all campuses and disciplines. Selected through a rigorous process, these ambassadors are leaders in driving sustainability initiatives at AASTMT.

New Initiatives and Activities: Academic Year 2024/2025
The following initiatives were carried out during the 2024/2025 academic year and represent new activity not previously reported. They demonstrate the broadening scope of student engagement with sustainability, awareness, and community responsibility at AASTMT Alexandria.
Sustainable Development Symposium (November 2024)
The Cultural and Social Activities Department at Abu Qir hosted a symposium on Presidential Initiatives and Sustainable Development on 6 November 2024, held at Al Farsi Hall. The event brought together government representatives and civil society organisations to discuss Egypt's presidential initiative "The Beginning of Human Building". Speakers included a member of the Egyptian Senate and a legal counsellor. All students and faculty were invited to participate in the discussion, which directly addressed SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), SDG 16 (Peace and Justice), and SDG 17 (Partnerships).

Disability Awareness and Inclusiveness Campaign (November 2024)
On 9 November 2024, the Department of Cultural and Social Activities at Abu Qir organised student participation in a national awareness campaign on the rights of people with disabilities, launched by the Ministry of Higher Education in cooperation with Hope Donors. The initiative promoted inclusiveness and cooperation within the university community and aligned with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

Symposium on Autism Awareness: "Towards a Better Tomorrow" (December 2024)
A student-supported symposium titled "Towards a Better Tomorrow for Autistic Children" was held at Al Farsi Hall, Abu Qir, on 4 December 2024. Organised by the Cultural and Social Activities Department, the event raised awareness of neurodiversity and inclusive education, connecting directly with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

WebWave Workshop: Web Development Bootcamp (March 2024)
The IEEE AAST Alexandria Student Branch organised the WebWave Workshop, a free multi-day web development bootcamp held from 12 to 21 March 2024, with more than 50 participants. The event covered front-end and back-end skills and awarded certificates of completion. While technical in focus, the initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by developing digital skills among students.

Palestine Solidarity Mural Art Workshop (October 2025)
Students at the Miami branch created a large-scale Palestine Mural over two days in October 2025, combining artistic expression with humanitarian awareness. The mural embodied solidarity with the people of Gaza and emphasised Egypt's peacebuilding role. This student-led creative initiative supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and reflects the SSA's commitment to connecting art with global human issues.

Sharm El-Sheikh Conference Newspaper Art Workshop (October 2025)
The Department of Cultural and Social Activities at Miami organised an art workshop titled "Drawing and Decoupage with Newspapers" on 14 October 2025, in which students created paintings using international newspaper clippings to reflect on Egypt's role at the Gaza Ceasefire Conference hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh. This initiative bridged sustainability awareness, media literacy, and national engagement, supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

Student Affairs Academic Journal (2024/2025)
The AASTMT Student Affairs Magazine serves as a student-run publishing platform that provides students with the opportunity to share research, ideas, and innovations across academic disciplines, including sustainability and marine sciences. The journal supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through its focus on maritime research and academic development. The journal is hosted through the Student Families unit under the Deanship of Student Affairs.

Orphan Day and Children's Family Solidarity Event (April 2025)
On 23 April 2025, the Department of Cultural and Social Activities at Abu Qir organised a "Children's Day and Family Solidarity (Orphan Day)" event with the participation of more than 370 children from responsibility centres and orphanages. The event featured recreational activities, competitions, and community engagement, directly supporting SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

IEEE Cybersecurity Awareness Event (April 2025)
The IEEE AAST Alexandria Student Branch organised the "CVE: Cybersecurity Vigilance Expedition" on 21 April 2025, bringing together 30 students to explore cybersecurity awareness, digital protection, and responsible use of technology. Participants received certificates upon completion. The initiative supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and contributes to building digital literacy for sustainable development.

Ramadan Community Service: Food Distribution (March 2024)
The Deanship of Student Affairs mobilised students from across all colleges to distribute Ramadan food boxes to workers and community members at the Abu Qir Youth Centre and Academy facilities on 12 March 2024. This voluntary community service initiative directly advances SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and reflects the SSA's broader commitment to social responsibility beyond campus boundaries.

Leaders Hub Event: Promoting Climate Awareness and Sustainable Practices
In collaboration with Empower Hub, AASTMT hosted the Leaders Hub event, aimed at promoting climate awareness and sustainable practices through student-led initiatives. Participants created impactful content on climate change, plastic pollution, and sustainable agriculture. This event demonstrated AASTMT's ongoing commitment to fostering climate literacy and supporting collaborations with civil society organisations for sustainable development.
