AASTMT actively promotes conscious water usage on its campuses through various initiatives aimed at raising awareness and encouraging sustainable water practices. These include campaigns, workshops, conferences, and training programs focused on water conservation. AASTMT launched several initiatives targeting students, school groups, and farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture and water-efficient practices through entrepreneurship programs. Public awareness efforts, including social media campaigns, further extended the reach of these initiatives. By integrating water conservation education into its activities, AASTMT aligns with Clean Water and Sanitation, emphasizing the importance of reducing water waste and managing resources responsibly.
AASTMT Colleges of Engineering and Pharmacy Launch “Every Drop Counts” Water Conservation Campaign
In support of SDG 6, the AASTMT has launched the “Every Drop Counts” campaign across the College of Engineering and the College of Pharmacy laboratories to promote responsible water use and sustainable practices among students and staff. Awareness posters were displayed throughout teaching laboratories, reminding students to conserve water during experiments and daily activities. Faculty members and lab instructors highlighted the importance of leak prevention, efficient water use, and environmental responsibility as part of hands-on learning. This initiative reflects AASTMT’s ongoing commitment to fostering a sustainability culture within academic environments, ensuring that future engineers, pharmacists, and researchers contribute to a water-conscious and environmentally responsible future.

EU-Funded Unigreen Climate Change Competition
The Unigreen National Climate Change Challenge, funded by the European Union, is a call to integrate environmental sustainability with economic feasibility, aligned with Egypt’s climate goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This challenge serves as a platform for pioneering innovations and technology-driven solutions to address the impacts of climate change, with a special focus on SDG. The competition encourages youth and innovators to develop ideas that improve water management, wastewater treatment, pollution control, and sanitation services, aiming to safeguard water resources and build more resilient communities. Led by Life Makers Foundation and the AASTMT, and implemented by Rowad El Nil, the challenge is organized in partnership with Samsung, Nile University, and several governmental entities. Participants will have the opportunity to compete for valuable prizes, network with sector leaders, and collaborate with institutions shaping the future of sustainability and water security.

AASTMT and Kassel University Collaborate on Coastal Urban Renewal Workshop Promoting Sustainable Waterfront Development
As part of its efforts to strengthen international academic cooperation, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) organized an international student workshop titled “Urban Renewal for Coastal Cities” in collaboration with Kassel University, Germany, and the Environmental Architecture and Design Department at AASTMT’s Alexandria and Port Said branches. The workshop, held on November 4, 2023, focused on sustainable urban planning for coastal cities, addressing themes such as urban regeneration, climate adaptation, and water–land interaction. Students explored strategies for creating resilient and inclusive coastal communities, emphasizing the importance of sustainable water and resource management in urban design—contributing directly to SDG 6.

Exploring Irrigation, Wastewater Treatment, and Water Resources in Modern Urban Landscapes
The Department of Architecture and Environmental Design organized a visit on 27/11/2024 to the American University in Cairo and Madinaty. Students explored modern irrigation management, rainwater harvesting, and innovative landscape design. The trip highlighted sustainable solutions in wastewater treatment, stormwater management, and the reuse of treated effluents for irrigation. They also learned about tackling water scarcity, ensuring drinking water quality, and integrating seawater desalination and groundwater protection in coastal community planning like Southmed in the North Coast.

Job Shadowing in Water and Wastewater Treatment with Suez
On November 27, 2024, students from the College of Engineering and Technology, Abu Qir, joined a Job Shadowing program with Suez Company in the field of water and wastewater treatment. The training introduced modern practices in wastewater management, effluent treatment, groundwater protection, and drinking water quality. It also highlighted sustainable solutions such as seawater desalination, rainwater harvesting, and constructed wetlands for tackling water scarcity and supporting sanitation and irrigation.The College thanked Suez Company for its valuable support in advancing students’ skills in water resources management and looks forward to further collaboration.

Enactus AAST Sheraton Tackles Water Pollution and Sustainability Through Innovative Projects in Global Entrepreneurship Competition
Enactus AAST Sheraton, representing the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, is competing in the global Enactus entrepreneurship program with projects addressing social and environmental challenges. AAST South Valley Students Explore Water Management and Irrigation Systems in Toshka
Students from the AAST South Valley branch, under cooperation with the Egyptian Armed Forces, visited the National Company for Land Reclamation and Cultivation in Toshka. They toured water pumping stations, advanced irrigation systems, and projects addressing water scarcity and sustainable water resource management. The visit not only highlighted practical applications in irrigation and sanitation but also inspired students with future career opportunities in Egypt’s national development projects.

AASTMT Launches Fisher-to-Fisher Program for Students to Promote Clean Seas, Recycling, and SDG 6 Sustainability Goals
On December 21, 2024, the AASTMT launched the “Fisher to Fisher” program in Alexandria to clean fishing harbors and recycle collected waste into reusable resources. The initiative directly supports SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by reducing marine pollution, promoting sustainable water management, and raising community awareness. AASTMT students from the College of Fisheries Technology and Aquaculture joined industry partners and civil society organizations to implement the program under the wider “Green & Clean” initiative, reinforcing Egypt’s efforts toward Agenda 2030.

AASTMT Students Enhance Skills in Sustainable Aquaculture and Water Quality Management
Students from the Faculty of Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) successfully completed the specialized training program “Common Fish Diseases, Good Fish Farm Management, and Water Quality Analysis”, held on August 5–6, 2024, at the Marine Aquaculture Development Project (MADE II) in Abu Qir. This program emphasized sustainable water resource management, aquatic ecosystem protection, and efficient fish farm practices—key components of SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). The training equipped students with practical skills to monitor and improve water quality, prevent aquatic contamination, and promote environmentally responsible aquaculture in alignment with Egypt’s sustainable development goals.

‘No Plastic Bags'... An Environmental Initiative to Raise Awareness Among AASTMT Students
The AASTMT has launched several environmental initiatives, including the "AASTMT Free of Plastic Bags" initiative, reflecting its commitment to climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability. These environmental initiatives are targeted for AASTMT students and offer a unique opportunity to engage in sustainability practices and contribute to environmental protection. Students are encouraged to participate in reducing single-use plastic on campus, which also extends to learning about efficient water use and resource management through both theoretical and hands-on experiences. Additionally, the launch of the Master’s in Smart Management of the Marine Environment offers students the chance to specialize in managing water resources sustainably, giving them the knowledge and tools to address real-world environmental challenges.

AASTMT Hosts Seminar on Climate Change and Sustainable Water Management: Empowering Students to Tackle Global Challenges
On the sidelines of COP 27, AASTMT organized a student seminar on environmental challenges and climate change under the directives of its President, Professor Ismail Abdel Ghaffar. The seminar, led by environmental expert Professor Ibrahim El-Shebini, focused on global climate issues and discussions from COP 27, particularly their impact on countries. The event emphasized the importance of sustainable water management and climate adaptation, aligning with SDG 6. Topics included water treatment and the global effects of climate change on water resources, highlighting the need for clean water and efficient water use in addressing environmental challenges. This initiative educated students on the role of sustainable water practices in mitigating climate change impacts, further contributing to SDG 6 goals.

AASTMT and Arab Youth Hackathon: Empowering Youth to Innovate Sustainable Water Solutions
The Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), in collaboration with the Arab Youth Center and partners like PepsiCo Egypt and Plug and Play Tech Center, organized the "Arab Youth Hackathon" initiative. This initiative encourages young people to develop effective solutions to pressing environmental challenges. The hackathon, which includes separate competitions in Egypt, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia, focuses on themes related to water, climate, agriculture, and the economy. Participants, including university students, graduates, and entrepreneurs, are tasked with innovating solutions to challenges like sustainable water management, directly contributing to SDG 6. Solutions aim to improve water conservation, efficiency, and access, addressing the global climate crisis. The winning teams will participate in the final hackathon at COP28 in Dubai in December 2023, developing projects under the guidance of experts in renewable energy and sustainable development.

AASTMT Aswan Students Visit Balana Water Plant: Promoting SDG 6 Awareness through Hands-On Learning
Students from the Department of Construction and Building Engineering at AASTMT's Aswan campus visited the construction site of the Balana Water Plant in Nasr Al-Nuba, part of the presidential initiative "Haya Karima." The visit was hosted by Bonyan for Integrated Contracting, a national company working in Aswan, and the students were given a comprehensive explanation of the project. This visit is highly beneficial for raising SDG 6 awareness among students as it exposes them to real-world applications of clean water infrastructure projects. It highlights the importance of sustainable water management and demonstrates the role of engineering in providing access to clean and safe water for communities, aligning with the goals of SDG 6. Through such practical experiences, students gain valuable insights into how engineering can address global water challenges.

AASTMT Students Advance SDG 6: Hands-On Training in Coastal Water Quality Management
The College of Fisheries Technology and Aquaculture at AASTMT organized a summer training program in collaboration with the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications in Borg El Arab. The program, titled "Principals of Coastal Water Quality Characteristics (Polluted and Non-Polluted),. It provided students with hands-on experience in collecting and analyzing coastal water samples to assess pollution levels. This training supports SDG 6 by teaching students sustainable water management practices. It focused on improving water quality through the analysis of coastal waters, emphasizing the importance of pollution prevention and fostering awareness about preserving water resources. Through practical experiments and advanced techniques, students gained valuable skills in monitoring and managing water quality, contributing to clean water and sanitation goals.

Empowering youth in Career profession and climate action in MENA Region
The WiEPower Forum at the College of Engineering & Technology, AAST, successfully empowered women and youth in the energy transition and climate action within the MENA region. Organized by IEEE WIE Egypt, the event focused on innovation, cooperation, and acceleration toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt Vision 2023. The forum provided a platform for exchanging knowledge, brainstorming, and creating actionable takeaways to build resilient societies through the active involvement of youth and professionals.

Enactus AAST Sheraton spreads awareness of Sustainable Development Goals
Enactus AAST Sheraton is a student-led organization focused on driving social and environmental change through entrepreneurial action. They work on various projects that promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including initiatives aimed at improving water management and sanitation, particularly through social media. By engaging students in practical projects, they encourage innovation and community involvement to address challenges like water scarcity, pollution, and sustainability. Through their work, Enactus empowers students to create solutions that benefit society and the environment while promoting sustainability awareness.

AASTIANS Go Green (2020- Present)
From the headquarters of the Academy at the Smart Village, AASTIANS Go Green is an initiative that started in 2020 till present which exhibited a series of awareness and activities events with AAST and the community serving all SDG goals. This initiative is part of the Academy's social responsibility and in line with the cooperation agreement signed with His Excellency Major General Mahmoud Shaarawy, the Minister of Local Development, and His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar Ismail, the President of the Arab Academy for Science Technology, and Maritime Transport, regarding the planning and implementation of the "GO Green" campaign.
Initiation of the Campaign
The initiative of the AASTMT to reduce the use of single-use plastics within its premises is under the patronage of Her Excellency Dr. Yasmin Fouad, the Minister of Environment of the Arab Republic of Egypt. This initiative is part of the AASTMT environmental awareness campaign within its facilities, aligning with the Ministry of Environment's university campaign 'Go Green' to minimize the use of single-use plastics and promote sustainable development goals. The initiation took place through a virtual meeting given a speech of the Minister of Environment at the seminar organized by the AASTMT under the title 'Entrepreneurship in the Environmental Sector (Waste Management, Natural Reserves)' on the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Entrepreneurship Center at the Academy. The seminar was attended by Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, the President of the Academy, Dr. Ali Abu Senna, the Assistant Minister of Environment for Projects, Dr. Khaled Al-Fara, the Advisor to the Waste Management Regulatory Agency, and Ms. Huda Al-Shawadfi, the Assistant Minister of Environment for Environmental Tourism Affairs. Dr. Yasmin Fuad highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Environment in qualifying and training young people. We were honored by the sponsorship of the President of the Republic for the initiative "Go Green," which is the first initiative of its kind that focuses on the environmental aspect. It aims to raise environmental awareness among citizens and youth, urging them to adopt positive behaviors towards their environment due to the importance of preserving the environment for the sustainability of natural resources.

Arab Youth "Green Venture"
The Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport's Deanship of Student Affairs at the Smart Village is set to launch the "Arab Youth Green Venture" project on March 15, 2022, with the patronage of the Egyptian Minister of Environment. This initiative aligns with Egypt hosting the COP 27 global climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh. The launch will include an exhibition featuring student-led environmental protection activities and projects presented by the Academy's students and graduates. Additionally, a sports marathon titled "AASTIANS Go Green" will kick off with the participation of responsibility centers, employees, and students, promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.


Go Green' initiative, proudly endorsed by the Academy in collaboration with the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs, and in line with the directives of His Excellency Professor Dr. Ismail Abdelghaffar, the President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, the Cultural and Social Activities Department of the Student Affairs at the Heliopolis campus organized a seminar on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, titled 'Efforts of the Ministry of Environment in Reducing the Use of Single-Use Plastic Bags.' The event took place at the Faculty of Language and Media Theater in Heliopolis. The seminar was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Mostafa El Bakly, Dean of Student Affairs at Heliopolis, and featured a presentation by Engineer Yusra Abdulaziz Saleh, the Coordinator of the Plastic Pollution File at the Technical Office of the Minister of Environment and Director-General of the Environmental Crisis Management Department.

“Go Green” students at the Academy's South Valley branch had the opportunity to participate in the 'Go Green' events organized by the Student Affairs Department at the branch. One of these events was a seminar on climate change and its impact on the world, titled 'Leave Your Mark with Your Name.' As part of the initiative, students were encouraged to plant a flower with their name inside the Academy's premises on Thursday, November 3, 2022, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the multipurpose hall of the old building. Additionally, students were invited to participate in a cycling marathon on Friday, November 4, 2022, from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

As part of social responsibility, the Rotary Club of Alexandria Sun Rise collaborated with the AASTMT to train a group of students from various international schools in the environmental initiative 'Go Green.'
