Cairo – June 25, 2022
The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, in collaboration with the Rowad 2030 Project, organized the third annual Startup Forum. Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical role of young entrepreneurs in developing green innovations to reduce emissions and ensure the sustainability of natural resources. The forum welcomed notable attendees, including Ahmed El-Alfi, Chairman of the Greek Campus, and Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT).
Dr. El-Said highlighted the forum’s alignment with the global celebration of Small Business Day, a recognition initiated by Egypt in 2016 to honor the contributions of small businesses and young innovators worldwide. She stressed that job creation for the country’s large youth population remains a primary goal of the Egyptian government, viewing this demographic as a valuable asset that demands enhanced investment.
Reflecting on recent global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the geopolitical crisis between Russia and Ukraine, Dr. El-Said noted Egypt’s balanced approach in managing economic activity alongside public health—a strategy that sustained production through these crises. She also pointed to the opportunities these challenges have created, such as advancements in technology, information infrastructure, and investments in startups and innovation. Dr. El-Said underscored the Ministry’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for startups, collaborating with the private sector and civil society to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
Training and human capital investment are key to nurturing an innovative spirit, she stated, with initiatives for establishing business incubators within universities to support and implement fresh ideas. This has led to partnerships with successful companies and volunteers who contribute expertise in "business clinics" to guide young innovators, overcome challenges, and achieve success.
Dr. El-Said also spoke about Egypt's hosting of COP27, which presents a significant opportunity to showcase the country’s commitment to sustainable, green projects that protect natural resources and reduce emissions. Egypt’s long-term strategic plan, she explained, revolves around three main pillars: economic growth, social protection, and environmental sustainability, all aimed at safeguarding resources for future generations.
In conclusion, Dr. El-Said urged young entrepreneurs to focus on developing green innovations that prioritize emissions reduction and the sustainable use of natural resources, underscoring the importance of environmentally conscious entrepreneurship.
