AASTMT Hosts International Conference on Marine Environmental Protection and Sustainable Waste Management

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) inaugurated the International Conference on “Waste Management Systems for Sustainable Tourism and Marine Environmental Protection” at its campus in Abu Qir, Alexandria. This event coincides with AASTMT’s Golden Jubilee celebration, marking 50 years since its establishment in Alexandria in 1972, which has since grown into a regional institution with branches across Egypt and the Arab world.

AASTMT President, Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, highlighted the conference's significance, especially as Egypt prepares to host the COP27 summit in Sharm El Sheikh. The conference's focus on sustainable tourism and marine environmental protection aligns with AASTMT’s commitment to climate action and sustainable development under SDG 13. AASTMT is recognized as an eco-friendly university for its efficient resource management, use of renewable energy, and integration of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals into its academic programs. Notably, AASTMT is the only institution in the region offering a Master’s degree in Smart Management of Marine Environment.

Dr. Alaa Abdel Wahid Abdel Bari, AASTMT’s Vice President for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, emphasized the vital role this project plays for Alexandria and noted that its success could facilitate similar applications across other Mediterranean cities. Given Alexandria’s large population and its activities impacting the marine environment, the city serves as a model for sustainable urban practices.

The conference was attended by international experts, including Dr. Michael Nell from the University of Rostock, Dr. Axel Borschmann from Germany’s Ministry of Environment, Samira Abadi from Tunisia’s Ministry of Interior, Karam Amzil from Morocco’s Ministry of Energy and Development, and Dr. Tarek El Araby, Head of the Egyptian Waste Management Regulatory Authority. Discussions covered various climate resilience strategies, including Egypt’s initiatives to reduce single-use plastics and implement secure landfills, in which AASTMT plays a crucial role.

Through this conference, AASTMT reinforces its leadership in environmental sustainability, focusing on waste management, CO2 reduction, and advancing climate-conscious tourism practices.
