AASTMT Hosts Earth Day Celebration and Climate Leaders Hub 2022 Closing Event for Climate Action and Sustainability Awareness

On Thursday, April 21st, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Abu Qir, Alexandria, partnered with Empower Hub to host an eco-friendly iftar in celebration of Earth Day and the conclusion of the 2022 Climate Leaders Hub project. This environmentally conscious event was held with minimal plastic use and zero food waste, underscoring AASTMT’s commitment to promoting climate resilience and sustainable practices in line with SDG 13.

The day commenced with a keynote speech by Dr. Amr Ramadan, Project Manager of Climate Leaders Hub and Founder of Empower Hub, who highlighted the urgent climate crisis facing Egypt and the world, emphasizing the devastating impact of plastic pollution on marine life and ecosystems. He expressed his anticipation for the upcoming COP27 summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, viewing it as a crucial platform for global climate action.

Following Dr. Ramadan, Dr. Hany Ayyad, a lecturer from AASTMT’s Faculty of Logistics and Maritime Transport, spoke about his PhD research on green transportation and the academy’s extensive efforts to promote sustainability within its campuses. He detailed AASTMT’s role in fostering a green transformation, making it a leader in sustainability-focused education and practices.

The event featured speeches by several prominent climate activists, including the founders of Greenation, Banlastic Egypt, and Youthink Green Egypt, who shared their insights on environmental issues and climate action in Egypt. The highlight of the day was an awards ceremony for the Climate Leaders Hub participants, recognizing teams that created impactful content on social media addressing specific climate issues in Egypt, such as the impact of climate change on agriculture.

First-place honors were awarded to Group 7 for their awareness video on the effects of climate change on key crops in Egypt, receiving a prize of EGP 5000. Additional prizes were awarded to other top-performing groups and participants, celebrating their dedication to climate literacy and sustainable development.

The event concluded with an eco-friendly iftar organized by Ms. Donia Nashaat, where attendees engaged in meaningful discussions about Egypt’s environmental challenges and proposed solutions. Through initiatives like the Climate Leaders Hub, AASTMT demonstrates its leadership in climate education, supporting a new generation of environmental advocates dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
