Overview

Academic Model
The academic philosophy for this program is primarily built on the modern archaeology school of
thought in a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach. This program tries to create a new
calibre who is an archaeologist by training, but also with a solid foundation in cultural heritage
studies. This new mixture of archaeology and cultural heritage will open wider horizons for the
graduates. This will also create a wider academic and professional discourse for the benefit of
cultural heritage in the region. The program offers eight specialisations: Egyptian Archaeology,
Ancient Near East and South Arabian Archaeology, African Archaeology, Islamic Archaeology,
Industrial and Contemporary Heritage, Maritime and Underwater Archaeology, Material Culture
Conservation and Architectural Conservation.
For each degree, there is a requirement of 72 credits of the core curriculum, 12 concentration and
3 electives in the designated specialisation. Students wishing to pursue a minor will take 5 courses
as extra credits.
At the end of the senior year, students will be required to write a bachelor thesis of 6000 – 9000
words on a chosen topic which will be defended in front of a committee.
The courses are taught in an interactive, communicative and practical where students are taught
to become self-learners through reflection, rationalisation and independent study.
