MauritaniaBilateral Relations
• Cultural and historical ties between Egypt and Mauritania are the cornerstones of the friendly relations between the two nations.
Egypt played a significant role in Mauritania's independence.
The Egyptian Cultural Center was inaugurated in 1964.
Egyptian universities and other Egyptian institutions also have a role in Mauritanian capacity building.
• The leaders of both countries maintain friendly relations and coordinate on various regional and international issues, especially issues relating to the support of Arab, African and Islamic issues, as well as non-alignment issues and third world countries concerns.
• The first Egyptian Mauritanian Joint Committee was held in Cairo from 8-16 November 2006 chaired by the Minsters of Foreign Affairs for both countries, which resulted in the signature of six agreements: Memorandum of Understanding for the Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement, Memorandum of Understanding for Tourism Cooperation, Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the field of Administrative Development, Executive Program for the Cultural and Technical Agreement, Cooperation Agreement between the Middle East News Agency and Mauritania News Agency.Mutual Visits:
• Mauritanian President H.E. Mohamed Ould Adbel Aziz visited Egypt from 2-4 April 2016 holding talks with H.E.
Abdel Fattah Al Sisi on the promotion of bilateral relations between Egypt and Mauritania and the coordination in regional issues.
The visit included the signature of six documents:
Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Health and Medicine, Executive Program for the Cooperation in the field of Culture, Protocol of Bilateral Cooperation in the field of Petroleum, Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in the field Housing and Utilities and Urban Communities, Cooperation Agreement in Livestock, Agreement in the field of Maritime Transport.
• H.E. President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi awarded H.E. President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz the Order of the Nile (the highest state honor) in recognition of the strong and significant ties between the two countries, in addition to the Mauritanian President's respected positions taken towards Egypt.
• The President of Mauritania attended the opening ceremony of the New Suez Canal on August 6th 2015, and also participated in the Arab Summit in its 26thsession.
• H.E. Dr Adel Elbeltagy the Former Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation attended on behalf of President Al Sisi the inauguration of President Mohamed Ould Abde Aziz in the Olympic Stadium in Nouakchott on August 2nd 2014. • Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz visited Egypt on November 5, 2017, heading a high-level delegation to participate in the World Youth Forum.
• Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry visited Mauritania on July 22, 2017 to attend the Arab Foreign Ministers' meetings in the framework of preparations for the 27th Arab Summit in Mauritania.
• Egypt’s Prime Minister Eng. Sherif Ismail visited Mauritania on July 25, 2017, to participate in the Arab Summit, and conveyed a letter from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.Trade Relations:
• Trade exchange between the two countries reached about 97 million L.E in 2013: 92 million USD Egyptian exports to Mauritania, 5 million USD imports (according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics of Egypt)
• Main Egyptian Exports to Mauritania include: cement, dairy products, juices, medicines, home appliances, ceramics, paper, office supplies, glass and paints.
• Main Egyptian imports from Mauritania include Sardines, fishery products and fish feed.
Cultural Relations:A Technical and Cultural Agreement between the two countries was signed on 2nd February 1967, and the Egyptian Cultural Center has been operating in Nouakchott since 1964 playing a noteworthy role in consolidating the Arabian identity in Mauritania since its independence.
The great Egyptian musician Rageh Dawood has been recently ed to compose the new national anthem of Mauritania in 2017.
