Program Description

The Master Program objectives are to enable officers to take full responsibility for ship safety, and security of passengers, crew, and cargo in accordance with international conventions and flag state requirements. These include safe navigation, cargo operations, engineering, emergency preparedness, and environmental protection. The program aims to enhance officers' knowledge of ship systems and instruments to enable effective decision-making in normal and emergency situations. It also provides knowledge in leadership, ship handling, cargo operations, engineering management, and crisis management to handle complex situations during voyages. The main goal is to develop the mandatory skills for officers to effectively manage all aspects of ship operations and fulfill their duties as ship masters.

Admission Requirements

Candidates applying to sit for Master certificate of competency examination shall meet the following requirements according to ministerial decree 221/2013: Be holding 1st Mate certificate of competency. Meet the medical fitness requirements for the certificate. Have an approved seagoing service of not less than 18 months as an officer in charge of navigation watch on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more on ocean going voyages after the date of holding the 1st Mate certificate of competency. Have completed the required upgrading training course in the recognized maritime institution. Have completed the required mandatory training courses in the recognized maritime institution in accordance to article 16 of the ministerial decree 221/2013. In case of completing the seagoing service on ships of less than 3000 gross tonnage, a tonnage limited certificate of competency will be issued after meeting the other requirements for certification. The tonnage limitation will only be removed after fulfilling seagoing service requirements on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more and passing an oral exam.

Tests & Prerequisites

Obtaining an approved seagoing service of not less than 18 months as an officer in charge of a navigation watch on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more on ocean-going voyages after the date of holding the 1st Mate certificate of competency.
