FSSC 22000 Version 6 Lead Auditor

This CQI & IRCA certified course provides you with the essential knowledge and skills to perform first-, second-, and third-party audits of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) against the FSSC 22000 Version 6 requirements. You'll learn how to plan, conduct, report, and follow up on audits in accordance with the guidelines in ISO 19011, ISO 22003-1, and ISO 17021-1.

  • Plan, conduct, and follow up on an FSMS audit to determine conformity (or non-conformity) with the FSSC 22000 standard.

  • Master the behavioral skills necessary for effective auditing, such as conducting interviews and collecting objective evidence.

Successful completion of this CQI and IRCA Certified FSSC 22000 Lead Auditor (FSMS) Training (within the five years prior to making an application to become a certificated auditor) will satisfy the training requirement for certification as an IRCA Certificated FSMS auditor.

Course Contents


Day 1: Foundation and Introduction

  • Introduction to Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS): The purpose and business benefits of an FSMS.

  • Auditing Principles: Understanding the types of audits, the audit lifecycle, and core auditing principles.

  • Understanding FSSC 22000 Version 6 Requirements:

  • A deep dive into the clauses of ISO 22000:2018 (Clauses 1-10).

  • The role of the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle in management systems.

  • Detailed review of the FSSC 22000 Version 6 additional requirements.

  • Understanding Prerequisite Programs (PRPs) as per ISO/TS 22002-1.

Day 2: Audit Planning

  • Roles and Responsibilities: Defining the roles of the lead auditor, the audit team, and the auditee.

  • Pre-Audit Planning:

  • Establishing the audit program and objectives.

  • Performing a document review.

  • Preparing the audit plan and working documents, including checklists.

  • The Opening Meeting: Preparing for and conducting an effective opening meeting.

Day 3: Conducting the Audit

  • Evidence Collection: Techniques for gathering objective evidence through observation, interviews, and document review.

  • Effective Interviewing Skills: Learning how to ask the right questions and extract key information.

  • Identifying non-conformities:

  • Defining and classifying nonconformities.

  • Writing clear and concise non-conformity reports.

  • Handling Difficult Situations: Strategies for managing challenging scenarios during an audit.

Day 4: Reporting and Follow-up

  • The Closing Meeting: Preparing for and presenting the audit findings at the closing meeting.

  • Audit Reporting:

  • Understanding the key components of a formal audit report.

  • Ensuring the report is clear, objective, and well-documented.

  • Corrective Actions: The responsibilities for corrective actions and setting up follow-up schedules.

  • Practical Exercises: Intensive role-playing and mock audits to simulate a real-world auditing scenario.

Day 5: Review and Examination

  • Comprehensive Review: A detailed review of all course topics to reinforce learning.

  • Exam Preparation: Discussion and practice with sample exam questions to help participants prepare.
