OVERVIEW:
The Doctor of Philosiphy (Ph.D.) Degree in Marine Engineering prepares the graduate students for a higher level of professional academic research and practice in local and international markets. It is intended for academic naval , marine and offshore fields and site engineers who are looking for a Ph.D. degree in their field of specialty.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
• The program provides students with a sound theoretical and analytical grasp of the subject, practical applications, awareness of responsibilities to society and the environment, and the requirement for flexibility. These skills are regarded as essential to the process of becoming a professional marine and offshore engineering professional.
• To produce graduates who have developed well founded knowledge, skills and understanding within specific subjects areas of marine/offshore engineering in its widest sense.
• To equip students with appropriate transferable theoretical and practical skills in computing and information technology, data collection and analysis, problem formulation and solving and communication skills, both oral and written.
• To enable students to enhance their learning experience, particularly with respect to project.
• To encourage students to develop awareness and responsible attitudes towards the needs of society and the environment in the application of their engineering knowledge, including a regard for safety appropriate to their profession.
• To produce graduates who are recognized by the marine and offshore faculty and industry worldwide as fully equipped to contribute at a professional engineering level, especially where Master’s degree is required.
• To instill in students an awareness of their professional responsibilities and the need for their own continuing professional development.
• An ability to solve engineering problems, thinking critically, function well in a team, and communicate effectively.
• A high standard of written and oral communication on academic and technical matters.
Program Structure:
Course work for the PhD. degree requires the completion of a minimum of (48) credit hours as follows:
A. Core Courses: 2 courses (6 Cr. hrs.)
B. Specialized Elective Courses: 4 courses from the Ph.D. Elective List. (12 Cr. hrs.)
C. Thesis Part - I (10 Cr. hrs.)
D. Thesis Part - II (10 Cr. hrs.)
E. Thesis Part - III. (10 Cr. hrs.)
